US officials confirmed they will not investigate the killing of Aysenur Eygi by Israeli forces, awaiting the outcome of an Israeli inquiry amid calls for independent accountability.
The United States has stated it does not intend to conduct an independent investigation into the killing of Aysenur Eygi, a US citizen shot by Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank. Eygi, 26, was fatally shot during a demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements, with eyewitnesses claiming she was intentionally targeted despite posing no threat.
The US State Department expressed the need for Israel to conduct a thorough investigation. However, the department has faced criticism for relying on an Israeli investigation, given the historical context of inadequate accountability for killings of Palestinians and US citizens by Israeli forces.
Eygi's family and Palestinian rights advocates have demanded accountability, arguing that an Israeli-led investigation is insufficient. Concerns have been raised regarding the credibility of such investigations, particularly in light of past incidents where Israeli authorities have dismissed killings of Palestinians as accidents.
Advocates are calling for an international investigation into Eygi's killing, stressing that the US government has historically failed to hold Israel accountable for its actions. Eygi, who had been involved in pro-Palestinian activism, was part of ongoing protests against the expansion of illegal settlements in Beita, an area marked by violence against demonstrators.
