US prosecutors have charged two men for inciting violence against minorities and government officials via the messaging app Telegram, motivated by white supremacist beliefs.
The Justice Department announced that Dallas Erin Humber and Matthew Robert Allison are facing 15 federal counts in California. The charges include soliciting hate crimes, conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, and murder of federal officials.
Humber, 34, from Elk Grove, California, and Allison, 37, from Boise, Idaho, were arrested last Friday. They are accused of leading the “Terrorgram Collective,” a transnational terrorist group operating on Telegram that promotes white supremacist ideology.
According to prosecutors, the defendants utilized Telegram to share bomb-making instructions and compile a list of assassination targets, which included a federal judge and a senator. They also expressed support for violent acts, such as a recent stabbing in Turkey.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen emphasized the significant risks posed by this group, noting that the department is committed to holding accountable those inciting violence online. The announcement comes amid rising concerns over political violence as the presidential election approaches.
