Safia Ahmadei, a student nurse acquitted of attempted kidnapping, described her experience with the justice system as devastating and life-altering following her release from prison.

Safia Ahmadei was accused of attempting to kidnap a baby from a neonatal ward at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. Following an 11-day trial, a jury found her not guilty in just 48 minutes, marking a significant moment in her battle to clear her name.

Ms. Ahmadei, who immigrated from Afghanistan in 2011 and was in her second year of nursing studies, stated that the wrongful allegations shattered her career and personal life. She faced severe hardships during her six-month remand, including multiple attacks from fellow inmates and isolation from her family.

The charges stemmed from what Ms. Ahmadei describes as a misunderstanding after she comforted a distressed mother in the neonatal ward. Despite her innocence, she was arrested after returning to the hospital to apologize, which led to her being surrounded by hospital staff and police.

Following her acquittal, Ms. Ahmadei expressed relief but also ongoing distress from the impact of the allegations and the subsequent media coverage. She remains determined to pursue her nursing career, hoping to be reinstated in her program despite the challenges she has faced.
