Syrian media reports say Israeli warplanes have carried out attacks across the country, including in the capital, Damascus.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that there have been over 100 air strikes in Syria, including on research facilities and military sites. Concurrently, the UN Security Council convenes to discuss the ongoing situation in Syria after Bashar al-Assad's downfall.
According to the SOHR, hundreds of air strikes have been conducted by the Israeli occupation forces in the past two days, including a site in Damascus allegedly utilized for rocket development by Iranian scientists.
The escalation of strikes coincides with warnings from the UN's chemical watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), urging Syrian authorities to secure potential chemical weapon stockpiles.
The use of chemical weapons is prohibited under international humanitarian law, and while the exact status of Syria's chemical arsenal remains unclear, former President Assad is believed to have maintained stockpiles beyond what was declared. Syria signed the OPCW's Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013, following a devastating nerve agent attack in Damascus that resulted in over 1,400 fatalities. Despite the destruction of declared chemical weapons, the use of such weapons has persisted throughout the Syrian civil war, with reports indicating at least 106 instances between 2014 and 2018.
On Monday, the OPCW communicated with Syrian authorities to emphasize the importance of securing all materials related to chemical weapons. Additionally, the Israeli military released images of troops crossing from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights into the demilitarized zone in Syria, indicating an illegal invasion of the Area of Separation.
