John Stringer, a Gwent police officer, has been convicted of multiple counts of sexually abusing a girl under 13, with sentencing scheduled for October 28.
John Stringer, 42, was found guilty of five counts of sexual abuse, including sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. The acts occurred between December 2019 and July 2021.
The abuse came to light when the victim disclosed the incidents to a teaching assistant. The court heard that Stringer touched the girl inappropriately and exposed her to pornographic material.
During her police interview, the victim expressed feelings of discomfort and fear of repercussions if she revealed the abuse. Stringer claimed to have been researching the effects of masturbation, which he discussed with the victim.
After a jury failed to reach a verdict in Stringer's initial trial, this time they took just under seven and a half hours to convict him. He is currently in custody pending sentencing.
Gwent Police's Assistant Chief Constable condemned the crimes as a betrayal of trust. Stringer, who joined the force in 2010, faces imminent misconduct proceedings.
